Why Do People Get Confused?
Gluten free or coeliac, what is the difference? If you have ever wondered, you are not alone. It is one of the most common questions we hear in the shop. Both terms are linked to avoiding gluten, but they mean very different things. At Health & Remedy in Chard, Somerset, we are here to help you understand what they mean and how they might affect your diet.
What Is the Difference?
Coeliac Disease
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition. When someone with coeliac disease eats gluten (a protein found in wheat, barley and rye), their immune system attacks their own gut. This damages the lining of the small intestine and makes it hard for the body to absorb nutrients. The symptoms can include bloating, diarrhoea, tiredness, weight loss and skin rashes. Coeliac disease can only be diagnosed with specific medical tests arranged by your GP. This often includes blood tests and sometimes a biopsy of the gut.
Gluten Sensitivity or Intolerance
Gluten sensitivity, also called non-coeliac gluten sensitivity, is different. People with this condition do not have the same autoimmune reaction, but they still feel unwell after eating gluten. Symptoms might include bloating, stomach pain or feeling tired, but there is no damage to the gut lining. There is no test to diagnose gluten sensitivity. It is usually confirmed by ruling out coeliac disease and seeing if symptoms improve on a gluten free diet.
